What is the Grade 10 Passion Project?

Every year, the grade 10s are required to create a passion project that explores their potential career paths. This is meant to help students consider their interests and how they could apply that into a career. Students choose a BH staff member to advise their project. It is up to the student to have meetings with their advisor in order to plan out their next steps. The project should be something that would help them in the future and it should be enjoyable for the student. In this website, you can explore my passion project, along with the process and final product.

Why Film?

As a kid, I was always drawn towards films and the making behind them. Prior to this project being brought to my attention, I had already known I wanted to go into film, so that was set in stone. Film is important to me because there are some things that images can represent more than words can. It helps express your ideas and thoughts when you can't put it into words.

Prior to this project, I had no experience within film making, which is another reason I felt the need to make this. Experience is important in order to build real-world skills and can help to apply your knowledge.

What is my Project?

I made the choice to do a project that consists of four parts - research, brainstorming, writing, and storyboarding.

My original concept was to make a short film. However, I decided that it would be more practical to dive deeper into one aspect of the film making process than to broadly explore the filming process.

So, because of this, I decided that I would create a script and draw a story board for it.

My project is a script for a pilot of a television show. I decided on a show rather than a movie or short film because it allows for more room to improve as the script continues. It also has added information, and therefore I could learn both the standard film script, and a television show script.

I chose to make a script based off of one of my personal favourite books; The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic. I decided to do this rather than my own idea because it gave me an idea of the difference between a book and a script. For example, there are some things that words express that images cannot, and there are some things that images express that words cannot. It also allowed me to put more effort and research into the actual script writing to get a sense of the process. If I was going to deep dive on one topic, it was going to be a deep dive.
